Our school boys team have qualified for the Kildare Final of the Spar Primary 5s 5-a-side football competition. Our squad of 8 players had 4 group games - drawing 0-0 against Timahoe and 2-2 against Scoil Diarmada before beating both Killashee and Naas CNS 5-0.
We were unlucky not to beat Timahoe as we found their goalkeeper in inspired form. In the second match against Scoil Diarmada we found ourselves 2-0 down at the halfway stage but the boys kept battling and goals from Jordan and Michael gave us a vital draw. The next match saw us really hit top gear as goals from Emmet, Jordan, Michael, Sean M and Aidan saw us overcome Killashee. In the final match we knew we had to win big to have a chance to qualify for the semi-final as the best placed runner up with Scoil Diarmada having beaten Timahoe. We did just that with goals coming from Mark, Aidan, Michael and two more from Sean M. The semi-final saw us up against Scoil Diarmada with whom we were lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw earlier. They went 1 up but we began to dominate play and deservedly got the equaliser through Aidan. The game went straight to penalties. Three penalty takers from each team were selected with Aidan, Michael and Emmet ready to step up for us. Scoil Diarmada struck first, scoring their first penalty before Aidan replied in emphatic fashion. Sean D pulled off a brilliant save to give us the advantage with Michael capitalising - scoring the second penalty. Their third penalty came off the upright and we were through! The final is scheduled to take place on the 31st of March! Stay tuned!! Our girls team also took part in the tournament - playing four group games. We were beaten in all four but they were very tight affairs. We lost 1-0 to Naas CNS in the opening game before Killashee beat us 2-0 in the second match. Abbey rattled the crossbar in that match but we just couldn't get the ball over the line. In the return match against Killashee we were beaten 2-0 again before Naas CNS beat us 3-0 in the final match. The girls played very well but lacked experience and a cutting edge up front. However, it was great fun and a great experience to play in the competition. There are lots of pics from the day on our Twitter page!
